DoP connection with Women's Action for New Directions (WAND)

Posted by Robert Weir, District Leader for DoP Michigan 6th

Six members of the DoP campaign in SW Michigan spoke at and participated in a meeting of Women's Action for New Directions (WAND) in Cassopolis last night (Monday, June 11).

WAND is a national organization of women who believe they can achieve "a better world" by "pull[ing] ourselves up to the tables of power and demand[ing] that our leaders set new priorities" regarding war, nuclear arms, and weapons.

The group in Cassopolis is the only WAND chapter in Michigan's 6th Congressional District. They held a Mother's Day march through downtown Cassopolis on Saturday, May 12, in which 60 people wore vibrant yellow t-shirts that proclaimed "Mothers and Others March for Peace."

Twenty-four WAND members and guests viewed a 20-minute video on the Department of Peace, then participated in a discussion that featured DoP members Peg Bozarth, Carol Higgins, Lyn Sperry, Karen Chadwick, Ray Hayes and Bob Weir.

Judy Rutherford, president of WAND, stated her intention to attend the DoP district meeting Thursday, June 14. This budding connection between the DoP campaign and the WAND chapter will be among the discussion items at that meeting.
