Posted by District Leader, Robert Weir The city commissions in Traverse City, Michigan, and Los Angeles, California, recently adopted resolutions to support the Department of Peace legislation (House Resolution 808). Traverse City adopted the resolution on Monday, November 26. In spite of heavy snowfall, significantly influential individuals in that community attended and spoke at the City Commission meeting. The decision was close with the mayor casting the deciding vote. Los Angeles adopted the resolution on Friday, December 7. With a population of 3.8 million people, the City of Los Angeles represents 1.2% of the U.S. population. That is quite a constituency to be in favor of the DoP bill. Six community governments have adopted DoP resolutions since October 1; four of those communities, including Kalamazoo, are in Michigan. The City Commission of Kalamazoo adopted their resolution on October 15. The City Clerk sent a copy of the resolution to Congressman Fred Upton and Senators Levin and Stabenow shortly thereafter. We also sent a letter to these three persons. Congressman Upton has not yet replied to our correspondence. Senators Levin and Stabenow replied with form letters. |
