Building a Culture of Peace DoP Newsletter 2/3/11

"Vision without action is merely a dream. Action without vision just passes the time. Vision with action can change the world." Joel Barker "Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything." George Bernard Shaw

Winds of Change in our DoP Chapter

The emphasis of our local DoP group is evolving in a new direction. Next Thursday, February 10th, at our monthly meeting we will be deciding on a mission statement.

At our last meeting we adopted three possibilities. Please review them and offer your feedback.

To function as a local department of peace, a resource for strategies of non-violent conflict resolution (Vision statement?)

Our mission is to introduce a passion for peace to people of all ages and beliefs, since peace is essential for the survival of the planet and all living things.

Our passion for peace is carried out by actively building a culture of peace in our local community as well as support of the passage and sustainment of the Youth Promise Act.

As a local Department of Peace striving to build a culture of peace through our personal and cooperative actions, our mission is to be a community resource for conflict resolution and non violence.

We support the passage of peace related legislation

We are eager to hear your response. Thank you.

PEACE ON EARTH FILM FESTIVAL 2011: RIGHTING THE BALANCE OF POWER

Chicago's third annual Peace on Earth Film Festival, will be held Feb. 25-27 at the city's Cultural Center. The entire event, which also features a panel discussion

with a number of the filmmakers, who are coming this year from Russia, Australia, Korea and the U.K., as well as the United States, along with a panel of local peacemakers is free of charge.

"We do see a lot of films that only tell us about the problems. Overall, we struggle to find films that show resolution," festival founder Nick Angotti told me. "Our thrust is peace — not, look at how bad things are, too bad we don't have peace."

The film festival sees itself as a focal point, an inspiration for moviemakers to transcend the clichés and cynicism of the industry and make movies that empower us

"to step out of the ignorance of conflict, violence and divisiveness into the light of communication, compassion and understanding."

Please come to our next meeting be the change you wish to happen in our DoP group. Thursday, February 10, Skyridge Church, 6:30 p.m. See you there!!

Peacefully submitted, Janice Lakers and Luana VanDam (co-chairs)
