April 2010 Meeting

Present: Jan AufderHeide, Lois Dickason, Chuck Harmon, John Kinch, Janice Lakers, Gail Nelson, Alice Noecker, Dane Terrill and Luana Van Dam.

J. Lakers called the meeting to order at 6:39 pm.

L. Dickason related her visit to Washington and her discussion with Congressman Upton.

L. Van Dam reported on the Beloved Community meetings with the Phi Beta Sigma fraternity at Western Michigan U arranged by ISAAC that some of us attended.

C. Harmon spoke of the recent activity in Washington DC to limit the spread of nuclear arms.

D. Terrill spoke about the history and purpose of Flowerfield Enterprises LLC. Their main motive is to add life to the soil using compost tea, the liquid form of compost. This compost tea fosters the growth of beneficial microrganisms in the soil. As a result, healthy plants will grow. This company offers its services to improve people's yards and gardens.

L. Dickason reported on diversity of groups and entertainers involved in Peace Pizzaz. She also reported on fund raising activities needed to support this event.

J. Lakers spoke on the option of ordering Peace Pizzaz t-shirts to sell. This appears to be too complicated and risky to be worth while.

L. Dickason reported on a local access tv opportunity to publicize Peace Pizzaz just before it takes place.

Strategies to publicize the DoP at Peace Pizzaz were discussed. We will distribute a survey to participants at the event to measure the its success.

Peace Pizzaz planning meetings will be held every Thursday at 4 pm at Winchell School till the event takes place.

In absence of our treasurer, a printed income statement was distributed. Total cash available is currently $2,366.00.The DoP Midwest Conference will be in Livonia, MI, on May 14-16, and some treasury funds will be available to defray the cost for people to attend.

John, Peg, Janice, Lowey, and Luana will attend the Kalamazoo City Council meeting on May 3 to request May to be proclaimed Peace Education Month.

More discussion occurred on Beloved Community meeting on April 21. The meeting was designed to bring people together who come from different backgrounds based on age and race. Preparations were discussed for the May 6 ISAAC Issues Convention to vote on the three most important issues that could be engaged to make ours a beloved community. The DoP will promote violence prevention at the convention to make it one of the top three issues. In addition, an ISAAC sponsored education summit is scheduled at Maple Street Magnet School on Saturday, April 24.

In May, the DoP annual meeting for confirming trustees, officers, and bylaws will be held.

The new design for DoP information cards was presented.

We are signed up to participate in the Kalamazoo Doo-Dah parade on Saturday, June 5. We will apply for a table at the art fair scheduled for downtown the same day.

Adjournment occurred at 8:42 pm.

Respectfully submitted,

John Kinch, recording secretary

Beloved Community-DoP and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity

Creating community in Kalamazoo continues via ISAAC's Beloved Community project. We have had two very stimulating meetings with our groups and will be continuing our dialogue on Thursday, May 27, with a potluck, location to be announced. If you are interested in attending, please contact Janice Lakers at 501-7000 or Luana VanDam at 372-5944.

ISAAC Issues Convention

Members of our DoP group presented a skit last Thursday, May 6, at this event. Violence prevention was addressed through two different approaches to conflict, the second one a win-win. Some of us are now committed to the chosen issue of the Youth Development Committee, which will include violence prevention.
